The Configurations tab is only available for organizations on the earlier contract experience. If an organization has the newer Contracts V3 experience turned on, this tab is not shown under Communications, since it depends on Segments, which is also unavailable in that experience.
1. Concepts
Not a settings page
Despite its name, Communications > Configurations does not hold organization-wide communication preferences. It is a general-purpose builder for one-off or automatic email campaigns, similar in spirit to Email Alerts but more manual and flexible: instead of the three fixed invoice-lifecycle events Email Alerts offers, Configurations allows building a campaign around any segment, any event type, and a trigger of choice.Organization-wide mail preferences, such as default senders or allow-lists, live elsewhere under the main Settings area, not on this Communications page.
What shows up in the list
The list’s columns are Name, Type, Status, Frequency, Sender, Segment, Document, and Created At, plus a Send Mail column whose row action opens a Preview & Send dialog.Recipients and preview
Clicking anywhere on a row, other than the Preview & Send action, navigates to a dedicated recipients page for that configuration, listing exactly which customers the segment currently resolves to (Id, Customer Name, Email), useful for confirming the audience before sending. Clicking the row’s Preview & Send button opens a separate dialog with a preview of the document that will be sent, a Send Email action to trigger the campaign, and an Editor shortcut into the underlying email template for adjusting the content first.Building a configuration
Adding a configuration walks through a few choices, each of which narrows the next:- Communications Name: a label for the campaign.
- Segment (required): which customers this targets. See Segments.
- Event Type: Email Invoice or Email Payment Reminder.
- Trigger Type: Automatic or Manual. See the warning above before choosing Automatic.
- Alert/Communication Type: choose between Email Alert and Webhook. Displayed on screen as “Alert/Communcation Type,” a typo in the product itself, not in this documentation.
Configurations versus Email Alerts
For one of the standard invoice-lifecycle moments (on generation, on approval, or a due-date reminder) targeting a straightforward audience, Email Alerts is the more guided path and is usually simpler to set up. Configurations is the better fit for a one-off send, a custom combination of segment and event type, or manual control over exactly when a campaign goes out.2. How-to guides
Create a configuration
- Go to Communications > Configurations, and click + Add Configuration.
- Fill in Communications Name, and select a Segment (required).
- Choose an Event Type: Email Invoice or Email Payment Reminder.
- Choose a Trigger Type: Automatic or Manual. Choosing Automatic saves successfully, but the configuration will not appear back in the list. See the warning under Concepts.
- Under Alert/Communication Type, choose Email Alert. Webhook is shown but not yet functional.
- Fill in Sender, optional CC and BCC, and the Document to send.
- Save.
Check who a configuration will reach
Click anywhere on the configuration’s row, other than Preview & Send, to open its recipients page, which lists exactly which customers the segment currently resolves to.Preview and send a manual configuration
Use the Preview & Send action on the configuration’s row to open a dialog with the document preview, then click Send Email.Jump to the underlying email template
From the Preview & Send dialog, use the Editor button to open the email template editor and adjust subject, body, or attachment before sending.Troubleshooting
- The Configurations tab is missing: the organization is on the newer Contracts V3 experience, where this tab and Segments are both unavailable.
- Webhook option does not seem to do anything: this is expected. Webhook is shown under Alert/Communication Type but is not yet functional. Use Email Alert instead.
- A configuration built with Trigger Type Automatic does not appear afterward: this is expected today. The list only displays configurations with Trigger Type Manual; Automatic ones save but do not appear here. This is a known limitation, not a sign the save failed.
- Recipients page shows fewer customers than expected: the segment’s filters are more restrictive than intended. Review or loosen the filters under Segments.
