# Walkthroughs

## Set up tax with the Zenskar tax engine

This walkthrough sets up tax for customers in Australia with the Zenskar tax engine. You create a [tax category](/docs/20260301/product-modules/settings/glossary#tax-category), add Australia as a [served country](/docs/20260301/product-modules/settings/glossary#served-country) of a [business entity](/docs/20260301/product-modules/settings/glossary#business-entity), and add a [tax rate](/docs/20260301/product-modules/settings/glossary#tax-rate) with GST at 10%. The tax rate also schedules a [rate change](/docs/20260301/product-modules/settings/glossary#rate-change) to 11% from 1 July 2027.

The percentages and dates are fictional.

### Prerequisites

* You need a role with the **Can Update Organisation Config** permission. For details, see [Permissions](/docs/20260301/product-modules/settings/tax-configuration/reference#permissions).
* The business entity must exist. To create one, see [Business entity](/docs/20260301/product-modules/settings/business-entity).

### Create the tax category

1. Go to **Settings** > **Tax Configuration**.
2. On the **Tax Categories** tab, click **Add Tax Category**.
3. In **Tax Category Name**, enter `SaaS subscription`.
4. Click **Add Tax Category**.

Zenskar confirms the change. The tax category appears in the list.

### Add Australia as a served country

1. On the **Entities** tab, find the card of the business entity, and click **Configure**.
2. On the **Countries Serving** tab, click **Add Country**.
3. In **Select Country**, select **Australia**.
4. In **Currencies**, select **AUD**.
5. In **Tax Engine**, select **Zenskar**.
6. Click **Add Country**.

Zenskar confirms the change. Australia appears in the list with the Zenskar [tax engine](/docs/20260301/product-modules/settings/glossary#tax-engine).

### Add the tax rate and schedule the rate change

1. On the **Tax Rates** tab, click **Add Tax Rate**.
2. In **Tax Category**, select **SaaS subscription**.
3. In **Country**, select **Australia**.
4. In the first rate change, enter the following values:
   * **Effective From**: 1 January 2026
   * **Tax Name**: `GST`
   * **Tax Percentage**: `10`
5. Click **Schedule Rate Change**.
6. In the second rate change, enter the following values:
   * **Effective From**: 1 July 2027
   * **Tax Name**: `GST`
   * **Tax Percentage**: `11`
7. Click **Add Tax Rate**.

Zenskar confirms that both rate changes are scheduled. Zenskar sets the end date of the first rate change to 30 June 2027.

### Result

* The **Tax Rates** tab lists the tax rate for **SaaS subscription** in Australia, with 2 rate changes.
* Between 1 January 2026 and 30 June 2027, the first rate change is **Active**, and the second rate change is **Scheduled**. From 1 July 2027, the second rate change is **Active**, and the first rate change is **Expired**.
* On the **Entities** tab, the card of the business entity shows 1 country, **Zenskar** in **Tax Tools**, and 1 tax rate in **Zenskar Tax Rates**.

To see both rate changes with their dates, click the number of rate changes. **Tax Rate Details** opens.

For how tax rates and rate changes work, see [Tax rates](/docs/20260301/product-modules/settings/tax-configuration/concepts/tax-rates#tax-rates-what-the-zenskar-tax-engine-applies).

## Move a served country to a third-party tax engine

This walkthrough continues [Set up tax with the Zenskar tax engine](#set-up-tax-with-the-zenskar-tax-engine). It moves Australia from the Zenskar tax engine to Avalara AvaTax. You map the `SaaS subscription` tax category to an Avalara tax code, and then change the tax engine for Australia.

### Prerequisites

* You need a role with the **Can Update Organisation Config** permission.
* Avalara AvaTax must be connected to the business entity. For steps, see [Avalara AvaTax](/docs/20260301/third-party-integrations/tax-automation/avalara-avatax).

### Map the tax category to an Avalara tax code

1. Go to **Settings** > **Tax Configuration**.
2. On the **Tax Categories** tab, find **SaaS subscription**, and click **Map Avalara code** in the **Avalara Tax Code** column.
3. Enter `SW054000`.
4. Click **Save**.

Zenskar confirms the mapping.

`SW054000` is an example. Look up the correct [third-party tax code](/docs/20260301/product-modules/settings/glossary#third-party-tax-code) in the Avalara tax-code catalog.

### Change the tax engine for Australia

> [!WARNING]
>
> Zenskar does not check the mapping when you change the tax engine. If a tax category has no Avalara tax code, this can affect [contracts](/docs/20260301/product-modules/contracts/concepts/contracts) that bill customers in Australia. Map the codes first, as in the previous section.

1. On the **Entities** tab, find the card of the business entity, and click **Configure**.
2. On the **Countries Serving** tab, open the menu of **Australia**, and click **Edit**.
3. In **Tax Engine**, select **Avalara**.
4. Click **Save Changes**.

Zenskar confirms the change.

### Result

* The business entity uses Avalara AvaTax for Australia. Avalara AvaTax calculates tax for Australia with its own tax rules and rates.
* The tax rate for **SaaS subscription** in Australia stays configured. It has no effect while the business entity uses Avalara AvaTax for Australia. It applies again if you change the tax engine for Australia back to **Zenskar**.
* On the **Entities** tab, the card of the business entity shows **Avalara** in **Tax Tools**.

For how tax engines work, see [Served countries and tax engines](/docs/20260301/product-modules/settings/tax-configuration/concepts/tax-configuration#served-countries-and-tax-engines).
