Before you start
Decide what you’re selling, and whether it’s billed per event (point in time) or per period (period of time). See product type: point in time and product type: period of time if you’re not sure which one fits.Step 1: Choose the product name and identifiers
- Give the product a name. This is what shows up on contracts and invoices.
- Optionally add a description. Any leading or trailing whitespace is trimmed automatically, and a blank description is stored as null.
- Optionally add a SKU, a unique identifier used for business-facing lookups. SKUs must be unique within the organization.
- Optionally add a slug, a reference used to link the product to an external system. Slugs must also be unique within the organization.
Step 2: Set the type and subtype
- Choose the type: point in time for something charged per event (an API call, an SMS sent), or period of time for something charged for access held across a window (a seat, a workspace).
- Choose a subtype. Quantity, a count of discrete units, is the only subtype available today for either type. Credits (for point in time) and On/off (for period of time) exist in the product catalog but aren’t yet selectable.
- Double-check this choice before attaching any pricing. The type can’t be changed once a pricing preset exists on the product.
Step 3: Set the unit label
Add a unit with singular and plural labels, for example “API call” and “API calls.” This is what shows up on invoices and in the UI wherever the product’s quantity is displayed.Step 4: Set the tax category
Assign a tax category to the product. This, combined with the tax nature (inclusive or exclusive) set when pricing is configured, lets Zenskar infer the correct tax rate at invoicing time. If your organization hasn’t configured tax categories yet, do that first under sales tax settings.Step 5: Set the initial status
Choose active (the default, for a product ready for new business) or inactive (for a product not yet intended for new business). You can’t create a product directly as archived. That status is reserved for retiring a product later.Step 6: Save the product
Once saved, the product is available to add to contracts by picking it manually when building out a contract’s line items. There is no auto-populate option in the product selection screen yet. What’s next
- To attach pricing to this product, see the contracts walkthrough. Pricing presets are configured when the product is added as a line item.
- To understand how changes to this product later will affect existing contracts, see products: concepts.
