# Line item: pricing

## Line item: pricing

This page explains the pricing of a line item and how it changes during the line-item duration.

### Map of concepts

| Concept | Details |
| - | - |
| [Pricing version](#pricing-versions-changes-to-the-pricing) | A line item charges with one pricing preset at a time. A change of price during the line item creates a new pricing version. |
| [Price override](#price-overrides) | A pricing version can change the amounts of its pricing preset without changing the pricing preset. |

### Related modules

The pricing of a line item uses the following modules:

| Module | Details |
| - | - |
| [Products](/docs/20260301/product-modules/products/concepts/products) | Each pricing version uses a pricing preset. You create pricing presets in that module. |
| [Pricing models](/docs/20260301/pricing-models/concepts/pricing-models) | Each pricing version calculates with the pricing model of its pricing preset. A price override changes the values of that pricing model. |
| [Contracts](/docs/20260301/product-modules/contracts/concepts/contracts) | The pricing belongs to the line items of a contract. |

## Pricing versions: changes to the pricing

A **pricing version** is the [version](/docs/20260301/product-modules/contracts/glossary#version) of the pricing of a [line item](/docs/20260301/product-modules/contracts/glossary#line-item). Each pricing version uses one [pricing preset](/docs/20260301/product-modules/products/glossary#pricing-preset) of the product. A new line item starts with one pricing version, which covers the whole [line-item duration](/docs/20260301/product-modules/contracts/glossary#line-item-duration).

## Adding and removing pricing versions

A new pricing version imports a pricing preset from the catalog. The catalog shows only the pricing presets in the currency of the [contract](/docs/20260301/product-modules/contracts/glossary#contract).

Zenskar places a new pricing version at the end of the line item. If the last pricing version ends before the line item, the new pricing version fills the gap. Otherwise, Zenskar splits the last pricing version at the start of a month near its middle. The dates of each pricing version can then change.

When a pricing version is deleted, the neighboring pricing version extends over its dates. A line item always keeps at least one pricing version.

## Create new pricing

<Info>Coming soon. The UI shows this option, but you cannot select it yet.</Info>

The UI describes this option as "Start fresh with a new version based on current pricing".

## Price overrides

A **price override** is a change that a line item makes to the amounts or the [pricing period](/docs/20260301/product-modules/products/glossary#pricing-period) of its pricing preset. The pricing preset itself does not change.

A pricing version can override, for example, the price per unit, the tier prices, or the pricing period. The line item marks each override, shows the catalog default, and can reset the override to the catalog default. Because the pricing preset does not change, other contracts that use it are not affected.
