This guide sets up a common subscription shape: a per-seat product with an add-on, a promotional credit that expires after a few months, an ongoing commitment discount, and a mid-contract seat change. It chains together module-level walkthroughs and how-to guides rather than repeating their steps here.

What this guide sets up

  • A period of time product, “Seats,” billed per seat per month
  • A second period of time product, “Priority support,” billed as a flat monthly add-on
  • A contract starting at 20 seats, amended to 25 partway through
  • A fixed discount giving a $500/month credit for the first 3 months only
  • A percent discount giving an ongoing 10% off for an annual commitment, stacked on top of the fixed credit

Product type: period of time

Fixed quantity, amendments, and why pricing period is required, the concepts this guide relies on.

Discounts: concepts

How fixed and percent discounts stack, and in what order.

Phase 1: Create the “Seats” product

Follow products: walkthrough:
  • Name: Seats
  • Type: Period of time
  • Subtype: Quantity
  • Unit: “seat” / “seats”
  • Pricing model: Per unit, $50
  • Usage is metered: off (fixed quantity, declared per contract)
  • Quantity strategy: Recurring
  • Billing cadence: Monthly

Phase 2: Create the “Priority support” product

Follow the same walkthrough again:
  • Name: Priority support
  • Type: Period of time
  • Subtype: Quantity
  • Pricing model: Per unit, $200
  • Usage is metered: off (fixed quantity, declared per contract)
  • Quantity strategy: Recurring
Feature is the closer conceptual match for an always-on-or-off add-on like this, since it doesn’t represent a count of anything. It isn’t selectable from the dashboard yet, though, so a fixed quantity of 1 achieves the same practical outcome today: a flat monthly charge that doesn’t vary. See product subtypes for where Feature fits once it’s available.

Phase 3: Create the contract

Follow contract: walkthrough to create a contract billed monthly. Add both products as line items: 20 seats, and 1 unit of Priority support.

Phase 4: Add the promotional fixed discount

Follow how to add a discount to a line item on the Seats line item:
  • Strategy: Fixed
  • Value: $500
  • Cadence: Monthly
  • Date range: the contract’s first 3 months only

Phase 5: Add the ongoing percent discount

Add a second discount to the same line item:
  • Strategy: Percent
  • Value: 10%
  • Date range: left open, since this discount runs for the life of the contract
Because the default stacking order applies fixed before percent, the 10% comes off what’s left after the $500 credit, not off the full bill. See discounts: discount stacking and order for the full calculation stack.

Phase 6: Amend the seat count mid-contract

Partway through month 2, follow how to change a recurring quantity from a future date to add a new quantity entry of 25 seats, effective the 16th of that month. Usage before that date keeps billing at 20 seats; usage from that date forward bills at 25.

Phase 7: Preview the first four months

Turn on invoice preview, following contract: walkthrough, step 4:
The fixed discount stops applying after month 4 begins, since its own date range only covers the first 3 months; the percent discount keeps applying indefinitely, since its date range was left open.

Phase 8: Publish

Follow contract: walkthrough, step 5 to publish the contract and start billing.
