# Contract features

## What a contract-level feature is

A feature is a commercial modifier, something that changes how a phase behaves, rather than a product you're selling. You configure features from the **Configure Features** panel on a phase, and they apply across everything in that phase rather than to one product alone.

This is a different, smaller set of features from the ones you can attach to an individual product's pricing. Use a contract-level feature when you want something to apply across the whole phase, and a product-level feature when it should only affect one specific product.

## The six contract-level feature types

| Feature       | What it does                                                                                                            |
| ------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Discount      | Reduces the phase's charges by a fixed amount or a percentage.                                                          |
| Tax           | Applies a tax rate across the phase, either entered manually or resolved through Avalara or Anrok.                      |
| Commitment    | Sets a minimum billing amount the customer is held to for the phase.                                                    |
| Consumptions  | Defines how usage draws down against a grant configured on one of the phase's products.                                 |
| Payment terms | Controls when invoices for this phase are due.                                                                          |
| Service fees  | Adds a fixed or percentage-based fee on top of the phase's charges, useful for things like onboarding or platform fees. |

  Free units and grants aren't contract-level features. If you need to grant a pool of usage or a block of free units, configure that on the product itself instead. See [features: concepts](/docs/20240301/product-modules/products/concepts/feature) for the product-level feature set.

## Tax, Avalara, and Anrok

The Tax feature can either be a manually entered rate, or resolved automatically through Avalara using a tax code or through [Anrok](/docs/20240301/third-party-integrations/tax-automation/anrok) using a tax category. This is the same choice available at the product level, just applied here across the whole phase instead of one product.

## Where to configure contract-level features

Open a phase and click **Configure Features**. From there you can add any of the six feature types above, and they'll apply to every product in that phase.
